About Huron and Perth Counties

Located in one of the most popular regions in Canada, the Avon Maitland District is situated in Southwestern Ontario. Our District borders Lake Huron in the west with beautiful beaches and fabulous sunsets, and across 6,100 square kilometre stretches east to one of the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) top 7 Intelligent Cities in the World, the city of Stratford.

Sign welcoming visitors to Goderich OntarioUrban comforts unite within a rural environment where many thriving communities can be found. In Huron County these include Goderich – Canada’s Prettiest Town and the Town of Wingham which, as part of North Huron, is rich with cultural, historical and recreational opportunities to enjoy hiking, antiquing, fishing, canoeing, snowmobiling and more.

In South Huron, the quaint and bustling little town of Exeter springs into overdrive each year with its annual Exeter Ram Rodeo. Lovely shops and restaurants complete a day of hiking and enjoying the Morrison Trail.  The Ontario’s West Coast Vacation Guide describes Huron County as “ a patchwork quilt of rural Canadian towns, farm landscapes, parks and Lake Huron shoreline, knit together by agriculture heritage dating back almost two hundred years. Huron County is a vacation destination of charm, culture, beauty and endless possibilities!”

Home to Justin Bieber, the world-famous Stratford Shakespeare Festival, the largest in North America draws audiences of more than 600,000 each year, with a season that runs from April to November. The Festival provides many out-reach activities, including educational opportunities for students and professional development programs for educators. Other flourishing Perth County communities include St. Marys, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame  and Listowel, Mitchell and Milverton, all mixed with urban amenities and rural flavour.

Avon Maitland is a 90 minute drive from Toronto – close enough to visit, but a world away from traffic and chaos of the larger city!
