Over 160,000 people call the Avon Maitland District in Southwestern Ontario their home.  Our district borders one of the Great Lakes, Lake Huron (beautiful beaches and fabulous sunsets)… and includes some of the most productive agricultural land in Canada. It covers the counties of Huron – Ontario’s West Coast, and Perth, famous for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

canadamapThe Board is a leader in embracing technology in the classroom, special English as a second language programs for international students, as well as advanced study opportunities in specialist programs for the arts and culture, environment, information and communications technology, health and wellness, manufacturing, hospitality and tourism, energy and transportation. The Board provides a student success based public education for 16,000 students in 30 elementary schools and 9 secondary schools.

Avon Maitland Schools are consistently high performers in provincial test results (EQAO)among the best in the province of Ontario. Stratford Central Secondary School is the home of “My Academy” a Theatre Arts Academy presented in partnership with the Stratford Festival.The Arts Academy runs each year in the second semester from February through June, operating 3-5 days a week after school. Stratford Northwestern Secondary School is host to a Baseball Academy in partnership with iCASE, the International Canadian Academy of Sports Excellence. The Baseball program is combined with high school credit course and features advance baseball training, kinesiology, a well equipment indoor training centre and a schedule of high profile tournaments in key U.S. locations.

A number of the Board’s secondary schools offer superior music programs and have been honoured with national and international awards. Events such as the Huron Musicfest involve bands from multiple secondary schools with hundreds of students performing together in this memorable concert attraction.

Specialist High Skills Programs at Avon Maitland Schools

The Avon Maitland District School Board has the highest participation rate in Ontario for students enrolling in Specialist High Skills Majors . These are specially designed programs that allow students to customize their secondary school course load based on their interests and talents. These programs provide the knowledge and skills students need to be successful in any pathway: Apprenticeship, College, University and the World of Work. Focus credits, certifications, work experiences and essential work skills prepare students for further education or employment in a particular sector of the economy.

AMDSB International Studies

Avon Maitland Schools are home to a vibrant and diversified international student program which provides a superior Ontario education opportunity and full English as a Second Language (ESL) support to all international students in all 9 of the District’s Public High Schools. Over the past three years we have welcomed over 600 students from 20 countries including Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, China, South Korea, Thailand, Germany, Denmark, France, Estonia, Switzerland and many more. Avon Maitland Schools have become a very popular choice for students looking for the study abroad opportunity not only for the high level academics and specialty programs, but also for the experience of living with an English speaking Canadian family throughout an attractive mix of small urban and country community lifestyles. The Avon Maitland District of Southwestern Ontario is perfectly located within a short distance of most of the provinces major cities and attractions and it truly represents hometown Canada.

As well our district is within short driving distances from major world destinations such as Toronto, Stratford and Kitchener-Waterloo, the home of Blackberry. As a result the Board is putting an even greater focus on education opportunities for international students in grades 6 through 12. The Board is also host to full experience summer camps for international students offering programs of 2 to 4 weeks filled with intensive English language learning, homestay and a solid mix of social and cultural excursions and experiences.
